At eHealth4everyone, we are implementing virtual reality by using digital applications and mobile devices that simulate health care scenarios allowing for high fidelity, high frequency experiences in a safe virtual space.
Our virtual reality platforms have compelling use cases in healthcare. They serve as training tools for providers and are used directly on patients to improve health outcomes.
We have worked on a virtual reality construct for Helping Babies Breathe (eHBB) in collaboration with the University of Washington and Oxford University. It is implemented at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. This platform is accessible at www.ehealth4everyone.com/virtual-reality
Case Study
Helping Babies Breathe (eHBB)
We have worked on a virtual reality construct for Helping Babies Breathe (eHBB) in collaboration with the University of Washington and Oxford University. It was tested at National Hospital Abuja and implemented at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Testing
The eHBB application usability testing in Nigeria was carried out at National Hospital in Abuja with eHealth4everyone serving as the lead facilitator during this process. The eHealth4everyone team within a space of 3 months carried out numerous testing of the application with Nurses, Midwives and Doctors specialized in the field of child birth and child health care. The team provided crucial feedback and recommendations to the developers of the application based on the testing results. The feedback was logged in and worked on to further improve the usability and performance of the application.
Implementation
The project consists of two major applications:
▪ eHBB virtual reality application.
▪ mHBS training and video application
Initialization and Set up of Smartphones:
Smart phones and tablets were set up with google accounts created by the development team to track the phones and ensure its use is solely for the eHBB/mHBS program. The google account names were also used as study ID’s for easy identification. The Virtual reality and Tracking & video applications were installed on these smartphone. After the installation process was completed, each participant’s unique study ID was set-up on the applications, synching their details with the application database.
Test and Review of Applications:
After completion of the installation and setup process, the applications were tested to ensure it works optimally and that data collected through the application can be accessed from the developers end.
Training and Execution:
Research assistants and training participants were trained on the utilization of the applications. For the duration of the training, the following were done:
▪ All participants involved in the training sessions were enrolled using their biodata.
▪ Tutorials on how to use the installed applications were conducted.
▪ Technical assistance was provided to the presenters and project assistants.
